Alur kingdom youth are renowned for being highly enterprising but majority stay idle and are not employed.
In Uganda , 52% are working for themselves only, and 43% are unpaid family workers. About 77% of the population aged 15 – 64 work. Unemployment is negligible at 3.2% for the adult population and 5.3% for youth, according to world bank.
Commenting on the bursaries offer, the Principal of Erussi Institute of Science and Technology, Darius Ekwang, observed that the admission qualification is in line with Uganda Business and Technical Education standards.
Ekwang noted that the numerous challenges parents and
students go through in accessing quality education , prompted them to strategically establish the Institute in Erussi Sub-county, to directly meet the needs of the people in Alur Kingdom.
“The costs involved in studying at Erussi Institute of Sciences and Technology are also moderate to encourage more enrolment of students from disadvantaged families”, Ekwang said in parts.
Around 700,000 young people reach working age every year in Uganda. This is expected to rise to an average of one million in the decade from 2030-2040, and it is already creating a mismatch between labour demand and supply, according to figures from world bank.
The Prime Minister of Alur Kingdom, Prince Lawrence Opar Angala, welcomes the bursary offers, which he says will go a long way in skilling young people in the Kingdom and make them employable, leading to the transformation of the Kingdom.
The Cultural Minister of Education and Environment, Dr. Sarah Akello, appeals to those interested in accessing the bursaries to contact the Kingdom as soon as possible through the listed contacts.
The offers has come timely, given the Kingdom's intensified efforts it has laid in fighting poverty, improving education and promoting social welfare of it's subjects.
On the flip side, the coming in of Erussi Institute of Science and Technology, is viewed as a blessing in Alur land, given the limited number of institutions in the area.
Subjects are being rallied to seize this available opportunities for transformation.
