Karua Warns Government That Ignoring Kizza Besigye's Release Could Harm Uganda’s Global Reputation

Kenya’s former Justice Minister and Dr. Kizza Besigye’s legal team leader, Martha Karua, has called on Ugandan authorities to honor the recent High Court ruling on civilian trials. Speaking at a press conference, Karua stated, “The High Court’s decision was welcomed by Ugandans and the world, but it will be unfortunate if it is ignored. Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajj Obeid Lutale are still being held illegally. We urge authorities not to tarnish Uganda’s reputation because the world is watching.”
Last Friday, the High Court ruled that trying civilians in military courts is unconstitutional and ordered that such cases be transferred to civilian courts. This ruling was seen as an important step toward protecting human rights and upholding the rule of law in Uganda.
Despite the ruling, Dr. Besigye and Hajj Lutale remain in custody, raising concerns about whether the government will comply with the court’s decision. The two were charged with security-related offenses, sparking legal and political debates.
Karua stressed the urgency of implementing the High Court’s decision, warning that Uganda’s reputation is at risk if authorities fail to comply. She emphasized that the international community is closely watching how the government handles the situation.
The case has drawn widespread attention, fueling discussions about judicial independence and human rights in Uganda. Many see the government’s response to this ruling as a key test of its commitment to justice and constitutional governance.
Martha Karua’s call for Uganda to respect the High Court’s ruling highlights the need to uphold the rule of law and ensure fair trials for civilians. With global attention on the matter, Uganda’s response will shape its legal and human rights reputation moving forward.
